About Us

Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Green Energy SA’s roots go back to 1975 when the founder and managing partner, Roy Potter arrived in South Africa from the UK.

Roy was born in the UK and studied City Guilds in Electronics in London. During his studies, he worked for Standard Telephones and Cables and qualified when he was 22 years old.

He sas sent to South Africa to repair the microwave link between Johannesburg and Durban – a task he completed in ten days.  He was then offered a position with the South African Post Office and immigrated to South Africa in in 1975.

He has owned and run several businesses over the years and gained a lot of experience with solar power during that time. In 2002 he decided to direct his technical skills entirely towards the renewable energy sector.

He formed Green Energy SA and has been supplying and installing renewable energy products since then.

A short history

• Our first business in South Africa was Instrument Technology CC we produced instruments for military vehicles in Pretoria.
• We then decided to produce a range of wireless burglar alarms that could be deployed on farms which were experiencing increasing security issues.
• AMC Classic, the waterless cookware company, subsequently acquired a major stake in our business.
• We then bought back their stake and started Southern Security in Cape Town which became hugely successful and eventually sold to Chubb Security.
• While running Southern Security, we needed good radio communications and heard about Ken Cantrell moving to Australia. We bought Multicode Electronics from him and took ownership of high-site radio repeater stations across Cape Town and the Peninisula.  The repeater stations all had wind and solar powered battery backup systems, providing our first practical experience in this field.
• We kept Multicode Electronics when Southern Security was sold and used it as the base for our new focus on renewable energy which we predicted would become a necessity in coming years.
• We both manufactured and represented a wide range of natural, clean and renewable energy products over the years, including cooking, solar hot water systems, energy-saving lighting and working in co-operation with Eskom as an Eskom Energy Service Company (EsCo).

Our Current Focus

We are now entirely focussed on renewable energy for homes and businesses.  We provide a range of renewable electric powersystems from from small to industrial, depending on customer requirements and budgets. 

NOTE:  We ship products to any location in the country but can only install and service equipment in the Cape Town Metropolitan area.  We will provide advice for self-installation in other parts of the country or customers can engage their own technicians to handle the task.
